  34. The disk provided with this application note contains MESSAGES.TXT, a
  35. text file with an alphabetical listing of Microsoft MS-DOS version 5.0
  36. messages and their descriptions. Please follow the instructions below
  37. to view the contents of this file.
  38.  
  39. Viewing MESSAGES.TXT
  40. --------------------

  42. 1. Insert the enclosed PD0489 disk in drive A.
  43.  
  44. 2. Copy MESSAGES.TXT to the directory containing your MS-DOS files. At
  45.    the command prompt, type the following and press ENTER:
  46.  
  47.       copy a:\messages.txt c:\dos\messages.txt
  48.       
  49.     Note: If you are copying MESSAGES.TXT from a drive other than A,
  50.     substitute the appropriate drive letter for "a" in the above
  51.     command. If your MS-DOS files are located in a directory other
  52.     than C:\DOS, make the appropriate change to the destination path
  53.     in the above command. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS
  54.     User's Guide and Reference" for more information on the COPY
  55.     command. It is not necessary to copy MESSAGES.TXT to your hard
  56.     drive, but it is generally faster to view a file as large as
  57.     MESSAGES.TXT from a hard drive rather than a floppy drive.

  59. 3. Use MS-DOS 5.0 Editor or Shell to view the contents of 
  60.    MESSAGES.TXT.
  61.  
  62.    *  To use MS-DOS Editor to view MESSAGES.TXT, type the following at
  63.       the command prompt and press ENTER:
  64.    
  65.          edit c:\dos\messages.txt
  66.       
  67.       You can use the arrow keys to scroll through the messages, or
  68.       you can use the Find command on the Editor Search menu to locate
  69.       a specific message. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS
  70.       User's Guide and Reference" for more information on using
  71.       Editor.
  72.    
  73.       If Editor reports there is insufficient memory to load
  74.       MESSAGES.TXT, you may need to free up conventional memory by
  75.       unloading other programs. For example, if you are running Editor
  76.       from a shell program such as MS-DOS Shell or Microsoft Windows,
  77.       completely exit the shell and try to start Editor again. Be
  78.       certain that you are exiting the shell program completely and
  79.       not just "shelling out" to the command prompt. Please refer to
  80.       your shell program's documentation for instructions on exiting
  81.       the program. Also, if you are loading memory-resident (terminate-
  82.       and-stay-resident, or TSR) programs, unload these programs and
  83.       try to start Editor again.
  84.    
  85.         Note: When exiting Editor be sure to not save any changes you
  86.         may have made to MESSAGES.TXT.

  88.    *  To use MS-DOS Shell to view the contents of MESSAGES.TXT, start
  89.       Shell by typing the following at the command prompt and then
  90.       pressing ENTER:
  91.    
  92.          dosshell
  93.       
  94.       Once in Shell, highlight MESSAGES.TXT in the file list and press
  95.       function key F9 to invoke the file viewer. You can use the arrow
  96.       keys to scroll through the file. Please refer to your "Microsoft
  97.       MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for more information on using
  98.       Shell.

  100. Printing MESSAGES.TXT
  101. ---------------------

  103. If you choose to print MESSAGES.TXT, you can use the MS-DOS PRINT
  104. command. Type the following command at the command prompt, then press
  105. ENTER:
  106.  
  107.    print c:\dos\messages.txt
  108.       
  109. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for
  110. more information on the PRINT command.
  111.  
  112.   WARNING: MESSAGES.TXT is a very large file (in excess of 70
  113.   pages) and can require considerable time to print. Please take
  114.   this into consideration before choosing to print this file.
